Balance of Fiestas Patrias: 829 traffic accidents and 25 fatalities were recorded, 38% less than last year

This Wednesday, after the Fiestas Patrias celebrations, Carabineros and various authorities gave an assessment of the operational work carried out for these dates. According to the national director of Order and Security of the police institution, Enrique Monrás, from 00.00 hours on Friday 15 to 23.59 hours on Tuesday 19 September, 687 fondas, traditional and/or Chilean festivities took place in the country. For this period, 11 temporary barracks were established nationwide, with a deployment of 10,337 Carabineros and 1,814 logistical resources. In total, he reported, 829 traffic accidents were recorded, 34% less than in 2022, in which 591 people were injured (35% less than in 2022) and 25 died (15 less than in 2022, i.e., a 38% decrease). The drugs seized amounted to 8,701 kg. In addition, 10 firearms, 17 bladed weapons, 1 explosive weapon and 5 vehicles were seized. Of the total number of arrests, 124 were for drunk driving, 88 for injuries, 87 for outstanding warrants, 52 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 29 for threatening and 27 for the alcohol law. In detail, Monrás explained, 15% corresponded to women and 85% to men; 83% were Chilean and 17% were foreigners. Ninety-five percent of those arrested were adults and 5% were children and adolescents. Likewise, 32,302 identity controls, 39,270 vehicle controls and 2,424 inspections of premises were carried out. Regarding traffic reports, 501,198 vehicles left the Metropolitan Region, 1.7% more than in 2022. In total, 106,106 vehicles were controlled nationwide. Of these controls, 7,439 were carried out jointly with SENDA (7.1%), and 30,974 tests were performed (30,681 alcotest with 530 arrests; and 293 narcotest with 36 arrests). Source: La Tercera
