On Thursday, October 2, during the second day of SeguridadExpo 2025, Minister of Justice and Human Rights Jaime Gajardo arrived at the Metropolitan Santiago convention center accompanied by a delegation from the Chilean Prison Service, led by its acting national director.
After touring various exhibition stands—where he learned about innovations such as the Taser device, BolaWrap, and other technological solutions—the secretary of state inaugurated the international conference “Challenges and Strategies in Prison Systems, Border Management, and Protection of Essential Infrastructure,” which is being held in parallel with the fair. In his speech, he highlighted SeguridadExpo 2025 as “a space for strategic reflection” for the sector.
In his presentation, entitled “Challenges facing the Chilean prison system,” the minister addressed issues such as prison overcrowding and the rise of organized crime in the region, along with the government’s responses to these problems.
“The state has responded with a comprehensive policy, strengthening prison security, modernizing prison infrastructure, and training prison staff in security, investigation, and prison intelligence. In recent years, our country has strengthened its legal framework by enacting a large number of laws in this area,” said Gajardo.
He also highlighted the role played by the Gendarmerie in prison security and social reintegration processes, as well as the growing use of technology: “We have invested heavily in surveillance systems. This fair helps us a lot to learn about the new technologies that are available,” he said.
Finally, the minister highlighted the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in strengthening internal security: “Many of the security solutions come from the private sector, which is well represented at this fair,” he concluded.
